Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse effects that stress could be a cause of. Perry claimed that she was too shy to act during high school, but started doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, performing in minor role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. She appeared on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in the ABC Drama Scandal. She was also cast in The CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
